Whether purposely-sunk as an artificial reef for scuba divers, or lost as the result of an accident, wrecks are fascinating windows to the past. Ships, airplanes and even cars are fascinating to explore and usually teem with aquatic life.  Each wreck dive offers a chance for discovery, potentially unlocking a mystery or spying something others have missed.  The PADI Wreck Diver Specialty course is popular because it offers rewarding adventures while observing responsible wreck diving practices.

If you’re at least 15 years old and have earned a PADI Adventure Diver certification or higher, you can enroll in the Wreck Diver Specialty course.  You will be required to have the Deep Diving Specialty or several logged deep dives.

There are many different types of wrecks, some of which are protected by laws that guard their historical and cultural significance. Your training starts by reviewing guidelines for researching and respecting wrecks.  During four dives you’ll learn:

  • Safety considerations for navigating and exploring wrecks.
  • Surveying and mapping a wreck.
  • Using penetration lines and reels to guide exploration.
  • Techniques to avoid kicking up silt or disturbing the wreck and its inhabitants.

This course consists of four dives and book work.   We include a day trip to Catalina Island (Catalina Express round trip ticket is included) where we do 2-3 non penetration wreck training dives.  Then on a separate day, we head down to San Diego where we board Waterhorse Charters (boat ticket also included) for 2 wreck dives, including one optional penetration dive and your certification card.

Specialty additional equipment required includes a primary and backup flashlight, line and reel or spool, a SMB and a slate.

We highly recommend the Enriched Air Specialty as well, which is only 199.00 if you take it concurrently with another course.

If you have a logged and signed off wreck dive by an instructor, this specialty can be only 3 dives.

TUITION:  $475.00 and includes materials, 1 day of diving at Casino Point and 1 day in San Diego and a certification card.  Minimum of 4 students required.

MEDICAL FORM: If applicant signs "yes" to any of the medical history questions, page 2 of the PADI medical form will need to be signed by a physician prior to class.
